Leadership Board Minutes November 2022

Minutes from a meeting of

Haygood United Methodist Church

Leadership Board (HUMC LB)

November 15, 2022, 6:30 p.m.

Attendees: Bill Slingerland, Sharon Jenkins, Kristie Farris, Jennifer Young, Kennis Sigmon, Joe Ford, Phyllis Porter, Pat Morgan, Kristin Fogle, Kyle Smith, Beth Fite, Mike LaRock (Lay Leader/Chair), Mike Fogle (Assoc Lay Leader), Beth Givens (Senior Pastor). Absent: Ceska Tripoli

Welcome/Opening Prayer:
The meeting was opened by Pastor Beth and Mike presided when he arrived a few minutes later.

Spiritual Formation:
Joe led a devotion based on "Can We Be Joyful Without Money and Stuff" by Pete Friso. In our culture more is better, but in reality, less is better because you have more time to invest in other things that are more important and have less stress.

Leadership Equipping:

Pastor Beth explained the concept of narrative budgeting.  It translates the numbers into ministry so that one can easily see what the money will be used for rather than using general categories. We will be moving toward it in future budgets.

The meals we prepared a few weeks ago for Rise Against Hunger have now been shipped to Nicaragua.

Vital Signs - new people:

Our attendance at the 8::30 services is holding steady.

Revenue and expenses are following their usual pattern.

Several new families are becoming active.

Goals Review/Accountability:

1)    Goal Driven Agenda and mindset:  This is now in place.

2)    Develop Measurable Strategic Communication plan to better inform Congregation:

3)    Development and Deployment of Ministry Teams

We will also have a discussion per the DS of the handout chapter from theologian Paul Tillich.

2)    Budget Review: The church budget of $691,483 was approved.  This is a 2.07% increase from last year. The pastor's salary was approved at our last meeting.   The preschool budget of $411,322 in expenses was approved.  They plan to increase tuition by $25/month in September.  They are also looking at going to a school year budget cycle rather than a calendar year budget.

3)    Trustee report:  We are awaiting an updated price quote on a new fire alarm system.  We are getting bids to repair the potholes in the East parking lot. A new security system will be installed after the Holidays.  There will be a meeting December 8 at 6:30 p.m. with those who will be getting credential cards.

4)    ASP:  ASP will sponsor an event December 18 for parents to drop off kids at the church while they go Christmas shopping.
